Basil Tonic Wine

Digestives & Tonics

Basil is well know as a culinary herb, but it is also an important medicinal one.

Unsurprisingly, it is a very uplifting herb.  And, I’m sure you agree, it smells just like summer! How can you feel down when you are reminded of sunny skies and warm weather?

This is a medicinal wine but it tastes great, so it can be used as a social beverage as well. Simply add it to soda water or lemonade with lots of ice and you have a cooling summer punch.

Ingredients

1 bottle red wine

1/2 cup basil, fresh and roughly torn

1/4 cup red rose petals

1 stick cinnamon

2 Tbsp Honey

Instructions

  • Open the red wine bottle and pour out 1/2 cup

  • Push the basil, cinnamon, rose petals and honey into the bottle

  • Fill the bottle as far as possible with the extra 1/2 cup wine

  • Close the bottle and shake well

  • Leave for 2-3 days in a dark cupboard. Shake daily

  • Strain and serve
